An artist with patience

In interviews, Elīna Garanča talks about patience a lot: about the time it takes to develop one’s voice, to work up a new repertoire and plan a career that leads to lasting success. And the Latvian mezzo-soprano, who is now one of the absolute stars in her field, obviously follows her own advice. Her opera career started with Mozart and Rossini; only much later did she approach roles like Saint-Saëns’s Dalila, Bizet’s Carmen or Wagner’s Kundry.

Only very recently, in January 2023, and after much preparation did Elīna Garanča tackle her personal vocal Mount Everest, the role that she sees as the pinnacle of her repertoire: Amneris in Verdi’s »Aida«. Her public has displayed patience as well: the diva made her last Hamburg appearance in 2019. Now she returns to the Elbphilharmonie with her husband Karel Mark Chichon on the rostrum and promises an evening of musical highlights with her warm and luminous voice. It was worth the wait.
