Courtly? Bourgeois? – Either way: Baroque!

Hanseatic city meets princely residence: in the 18th century, Hamburg and Dresden were among the cities that literally set the tone in Europe. While public concerts for the bourgeoisie and music in churches flourished in the North German metropolis, attracting the leading composers of the day to work as directors of music, the splendid court of the Electors of Saxony and Kings of Poland farther up the River Elbe in Dresden evolved into a veritable Olympus of Baroque music. The traditional Christmas concert given by the Hamburger Camerata puts on an imaginary summit meeting of the leading musical ambassadors from the the two cities, which are now twin towns.
