While holidaying by Lake Thun in the summer of 1887, Johannes Brahms had the »curious idea« of writing a concerto for two soloists, or, as he himself joked, featuring a »giant, eight-stringed violin«. The result was a brilliant work with which young Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández makes his debut with the Symphoniker Hamburg in this concert. The Fourth Symphony is another piece that Brahms wrote on vacation. The composer wondered »whether it will find an audience. I fear that it tastes too much of the local climate: the cherries here are not ripening«!
