In Hamburg in February, summer is still a distant dream, but the Symphoniker Hamburg promises Mediterranean temperatures in tonight’s programme: Edward Elgar wrote his sparkling concert overture in 1904 after a holiday on the Riviera, and the music conjures up the Italian sun. Brahms was likewise full of longing for Italy, as reflected in his Second Piano Concerto. Master pianist Gerhard Oppitz performs these pearls of music history in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall.

Please note: Since the death of its principal conductor Sir Jeffrey Tate in June 2017, the Symphoniker Hamburg has reorganised its 2017/18 season. The concert programmes and the performers may be different from those originally published.
