»Every farewell is difficult« – in the last symphony that Gustav Mahler completed, this banal saying turns into a deeply moving musical experience. How much silence and deceleration can someone bear? Mahler takes an unbelievably long time over the main subject of the last movement, expanding it further and further until he finally lets it die away in infinite slowness. It’s going to be interesting to hear how Teodor Currentzis and his SWR Symphonieorchester interpret the work: their reading will certainly be unconventional, as the Greek conductor has a reputation to defend.

»Conductor of the Year«, »an exceptional artist«, »a revolutionary spirit« – there is no shortage of superlatives applied to the conductor Teodor Currentzis, who was born in Athens in 1973. At the beginning of the 2018/19 season, he took up the position of principal conductor of the SWR Symphonieorchester. Currentzis and his new orchestra have already accumulated extensive concert experience together.

Currentzis has demonstrated on numerous CDs his talent for producing new, refreshing and energy-laden readings of well-known works of classical music. He has already made quite a number of guest appearances in Hamburg with the SWR Symphonieorchester and his musicAeterna ensembles, and in the 2018/19 season, the Elbphilharmonie dedicated an extensive spotlight to this exciting conductor.
