He is what’s known as a living legend: Pinchas Zukerman’s expressive sound and immaculate technique recall earlier eras of violin art, as represented by his former role model Jascha Heifetz or his famous teacher Isaac Stern. It was Stern who discovered him at the age of 12 in Tel Aviv and enrolled him as a student at New York’s Juilliard School without further ado. The musician’s career that followed is a prime example of what Pinchas Zukerman now teaches his own students: talent means responsibility. Tonight in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall, Zukerman can be heard in Bruch’s popular Violin Concerto No. 1, a true Romantic showpiece, alongside 29-year-old Israeli shooting star Lahav Shani.
