Kirill Gerstein has something unique to offer as a member of the premier league of international pianists. He is just as comfortable playing classical music as he is playing jazz. After emigrating to the United States of America, he initially studied jazz for three years before switching to concentrate mainly on classical training.

This has done no harm to the level of success he has enjoyed – on the contrary. In 2015, Kirill Gerstein won the ECHO Klassik for his brilliant first recording of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in the newly released original version.

In his »Pianomania« recital, Gerstein demonstrates the whole range of his ability. »Classical« études by Liszt, Blumenfeld and Scriabin – all masterpieces of the genre – side by side with »jazzy« works by Ligeti and Earl Wild. While Ligeti drew inspiration from Thelonius Monk and Bill Evans, it is the Gershwin classics »Embraceable You« and »I Got Rhythm« that underlie Earl Wild’s virtuosic piano pieces.
