Two months after the grand opening of the Elbphilharmonie, the NDR Jugendsinfonieorchester (youth symphony orchestra) will conquer the new concert platform for the first time, under the direction of Garrett Keast. Next to works by Bernstein, Britten and Tchaikovsky they will present »Handsfree«: a body-percussion composition by innovative British artist Anna Meredith. Special guests are young musicians from Hamburg’s twin cities, among them instrumentalists from Shanghai.

The NDR Jugendsinfonieorchester was founded in 2012 by the Academy of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. Twice a year it offers talented young musicians a chance to work on core repertoire with renowned conductors such as Thomas Hengelbrock, Krzysztof Urbański and Matthias Pintscher. The musicians of this orchestra are members of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra Academy, students of various conservatories in northern Germany, successful participants of the competition »Jugend musiziert« or are selected members from the leading youth orchestras in northern Germany.
