Teodor Currentzis is something of a rockstar among contemporary conductors. With his undogmatic approach to great classical works, the Greek-born artist always guarantees excitement. Around Easter, he and his musicAeterna ensemble are performing several concerts in the Elbphilharmonie. Unfortunately, because of the war in Ukraine and the resulting travel restrictions, the musicAeterna Choir cannot come to Hamburg, and so the programme has had to be changed. The Saint Petersburg-based multinational orchestra musicAeterna will be joined for this concert by Ukrainian musicians based in Europe.

Instead of the originally planned works built around Alfred Schnittke’s »Choir Concerto«, a new, specially developed programme will now be performed. It combines slow movements from piano concertos by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Ravel and Schostakowitsch with introspective pieces such as Samuel Barber’s »Adagio for Strings«. The result is a musical meditation that is perfect for Good Friday and for the emotionally intensive approach of Currentzis and musicAeterna. Pianist Alexandre Kantorow is the soloist.
