»Just do it yourself, that’s it!« is Kuoko’s motto – as simple as it is successful. And the electronic musician, Hamburg-based, takes it quite literally. She has taught herself the art of producing purely by watching YouTube tutorials. And that’s not all: she also writes her own lyrics, oversees the whole creative conception side and, of course, she sings as well. It seems perfectly natural then, that she would name her first album after herself. The eleven tracks on »Kuoko« sum up what she is all about, according to the artist, and her album has been streamed millions of times to date. And even though she is reluctant to discuss her private life, it does get pretty personal in her music. Kuoko sings about anti-Asian racism and society’s expectations of women – wrapping up her message in the most beautiful psychedelic pop garb. »Dreamy and self-assured at the same time,« is how the Tagesspiegel newspaper sums it up.
