One opera is not the same as another. The English thought they knew better three centuries ago – for British theatres around the year 1700, there was no question of putting on opera in the style that was in vogue on the Continent. The local preference was for a bold mix of theatre and music, enhanced with dance interludes and all manner of magic effects. Henry Purcell’s »King Arthur«, first performed in 1691 at London’s Dorset Garden, is rooted in this tradition.

Paul McCreesh and his award-winning ensemble Gabrieli Consort & Players will be performing Purcell’s masterpiece: the audience can look forward to an evening of exquisite entertainment.
