The Orchestral Roar and the Melodiousness of Song

»You can really grow fond of Dvořák’s scores. Hardly have you got to know one melody than the next one comes around the corner.« Composer Leoš Janáček was not the only person to instantly fall under the spell of his countryman Antonín Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony. The work interweaves a deeply Romantic orchestral sound with birdsong and with the folk music of Dvořák’s native Bohemia, bringing it a popularity that has remained undiminished to this day. Tonight, Dvořák’s Eighth is performed in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall by the fantastic hr Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Columbian star conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada. The reprogrammed concert is rounded off by Schubert Lieder arranged for orchestra, where the solo part is sung by tenor Christian Elsner, an artist much in demand for both opera roles and for song recitals.
