Tracing the African Roots of Jazz

Give and take, communicate and exchange ideas: this is how the music of the Hamburg pianist Hans Lüdemann and his Trio Ivoire can be described. It is a meeting of worlds; archaic technology meets modernity, Africa meets Europe. A Well-Tempered Clavier and a »naturally« tuned balafon assume a perfect symbiosis.

After a sojourn in Africa in 1999, Hans Lüdemann founded the Hans Lüdemann Trio Ivoire with the balafon player Aly Keïta, who comes from a Griot family from the Ivory Coast. Together they translate the tension between European jazz and the diverse music of Africa into a living form. Many have tried similar projects, but the Hans Lüdemann Trio Ivoire balances the various forces so sensitively that neither style pushes the other into the background.
