Jazz without boundaries

Hearing Miles Davis was » a kind of shock« for Gee Hye Lee. After she had already won several prizes in her native South Korea as a classical pianist, »Kind of Blue« prompted her to switch to jazz at the age of 16, and to move to Germany. Gee Hye Lee has been living in Stuttgart since 1996, and she was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Prize for her playing, which the jury praised as »technically brilliant with the utmost musical expression«.

The pianist herself says: »When I play jazz, I always discover new sides to myself«. Her own compositions can be melodic and bluesy, but also rhythmically complex. Her models are Esbjörn Svensson und Bill Evans. Bass player Joel Locher has been her congenial accompanist for quite a while. Live and on her trio album »What Matters Most«, we also hear the young percussionist Mareike Wiening, who garnered acclaim from the American press for her six years in New York.

After the interval, the concert continues with an international flavour: The Jazzdor Festival in Straßburg has been providing unforgettable insights into the contemporary French jazz scene since 1986. In 2007, the festival established a satellite in Berlin, and the programme since then has featured French-German projects that cross national and artistic boundaries.

June 2019 saw the emergence of »Extradiversion«, a special co-production between NDR Jazz and Jazzdor where Anna-Lena Schnabel, Florian Weber, Joachim Florent and Edward Perraud joined forces – creative, imaginative and daring spirits who complement each other as both players and composers in an almost uncanny way. In the meantime, the group has been joined by Daniel Erdmann on tenor sax. These five strong personalities produce music of existential beauty, for which they make a decisive step into the unknown in every piece they play. Up to now, the five musicians have given concerts in Straßburg und Berlin – now the co-production finally comes to Hamburg under the title »Extradiversion II«.
