Divine inspiration

In 2018, at the age of just 21, Eric Lu caused a sensation when he won the Leeds International Piano Competition, regarded as one of the most important and prestigious piano competitions in the world. The fast-paced career of the Chinese-American pianist cannot just be put down to this spectacular success. It is owed above all to his versatility, which he demonstrates superbly Schubert’s piano sonatas, among other works.

The »Piano Sonata in E major, D 157«, written when Schubert was a teenager, was the first time the composer demonstrated his remarkable talent in this genre. He was to display this a total of 21 times over the course of his short life. Eric Lu contrasts this ingenious youthful work with another sonata from Schubert’s mature period, known as the »Reliquie«. The world of sound evoked in this unfinished piece is often as mysterious as the nickname it has been given.

Finally, with his profound »Piano Sonata in A major, D 959«, Schubert reaches the absolute pinnacle of his artistry shortly before his death. In it, divine inspiration meets the possibilities of an unlimited imagination.
