»The Doric String Quartet’s daring, imaginative and technically superb performances demand to be heard.« Those were the words used by Gramophone magazine to describe the exceptional level achieved by the British string quartet, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018. Alongside Britten and Schubert on the anniversary programme is, as you would expect, Haydn, whose complete string quartets the four musicians are currently recording.

With his String Quartet No. 37 of 1781, Joseph Haydn began a series of six works that would, with their melodic and folk-like elements, influence Mozart and many others. The Doric String Quartet then makes a leap of almost exactly two centuries with the String Quartet No. 3 by their compatriot Benjamin Britten. His often-wistful tone leads on to Franz Schubert’s String Quartet in G major, whose expressive power and perfect form make it one of the major achievements of the string quartet canon.
