Inspiration from the surfer’s paradise

A super hit, a unique work and a premiere – can there be more variety in one concert? The great opera composer Giuseppe Verdi wrote his only string quartet more to pass the time rather than on the basis of any great plan. In spring 1873 he was in Naples waiting for the premiere of his opera »Aida«. In contrast, clarinettist David Orlowsky certainly won’t have been looking for ways to pass the time over the last few months. His first clarinet quintet is being premiered in this concert.

After the interval there follows the »super hit« of the evening: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s famous Clarinet Quintet. Mozart wrote the quintet for his friend Anton Stadler, whom he called »red-currant face«, alluding to Stadler’s deep-red blush when playing.
