Homeland, homelessness, fate and migration – these are themes that Franz Schubert dealt with in his famous song cycle »Winterreise«, giving the work a remarkable topicality in our own time. And this is even more true when the musicians performing are directly affected by such circumstances. Like the singers of the Chor zur Welt (World Choir), which the Elbphilharmonie set up as a Syrian-German project choir in spring 2016; the choir’s members are amateurs from many different countries who speak a wide variety of languages.

They come together in this concert to make an authentic statement on the subject of »homeland«. To this end, they have chosen four songs from Schubert’s »Winterreise«, which they combine with other fitting pieces from the world of Arab and Turkish music. The Chor zur Welt is accompanied by the Ensemble Resonanz, the singer and saz player Derya Yildirim from Hamburg, and other soloists. And the renowned Turkish composer Taner Akyol was commissioned to write a large-scale piece for exactly this formation.

The concert belongs to a series of projects built around Schubert’s »Winterreise« that runs over the length of this season.
