Violinist Ray Chen is one of those soloists where you can simply lean back and enjoy the music. Even in the most challenging moments, he is in perfect command of his instrument. And this instinctive certainty is definitely called for when Chen joins forces with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra to play the Third Violin Concerto by Camille Saint-Saëns: even if the brilliant solo part does not sparkle in the foreground quite as conspicuously as in the composer’s two earlier concertos, virtuosity is nonetheless a central feature of the score.

After the interval, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra with Manfred Honeck on the rostrum embraces the entire world: full of youthful exuberance, it portrays the world’s (natural) beauty, but also its darker depths in Mahler’s First Symphony. The work is an emotional roller coaster true to the spirit of the Romantic movement: euphoric one minute, depressed the next.
