The saxophonist and composer Branford Marsalis, a steady fixture in jazz for the past three decades, has been performing together with the musicians in his quartet for many years. Although they very rarely allow guest musicians into their circle, for jazz singer Kurt Elling they have made an exception.

Born in 1960 as the oldest son in the Marsalis jazz-dynasty from New Orleans, music is undeniably in his blood. However, Marsalis has never been a jazz purist: he has worked together with popstars such as Sting and Tina Turner as well as the legendary psychedelic rock band The Grateful Dead. Having an appreciation for music that is accessible for everyone, in interviews he often stresses the value of emotionally enriching melodies over soulless abstraction and virtuosity.

With intoxicating vocal improvisations and a baritone voice that encompasses four octaves, Kurt Elling adds an exciting new colour to the musical spectrum of the Branford Marsalis Quartet.
