Talking Heads Reinvented

As the successor to Miriam Makeba, Angélique Kidjo from Benin has transformed herself from the femme fatale of Afro funk to the new Mama Africa. But she remains unpredictable: in her current programme, she reinvents the Talking Heads album »Remain in Light« from 1980.

It was in the early nineties when Angélique Kidjo became one of the most conspicuous figures of the early world music scene, all amazon with her zebra costume. Kidjo travelled the world, stopping in Brazil and Cuba in search of musical affinities with West Africa, and even covered the Rolling Stones in a bid to bring rock’n’roll back to Africa.

Kidjo now continues the latter activity from a different angle: as early as 1983, she discovered the Talking Heads album »Remain in Light« during her exile in Paris, which contains hits like »Once in a Lifetime« and »Houses in Motion«. With her adaptation of this new wave classic, Kidjo established links between the voodoo cult practised by her ancestors and the urban jungle of the Big Apple, adding African sayings and Afrobeat grooves to the texts of Talking Heads founder David Byrne.
