Reduced to the greatest possible

A slow sequence of high-tension string chords, as dark and cold as an icy desert: Alva Noto wrote the music for the Oscar-winning feature film »The Revenant«, together with Ryūichi Sakamoto. The soundtrack placed him firmly at the epicentre of the international music world.

Behind the pseudonym Alva Noto is the visual artist, composer and musician Carsten Nicolai. Whether it’s film projects, album productions with Michael Nyman and Blixa Bargeld, installations for the Guggenheim Museum, the Venice Biennale or documenta – Carsten Nicolai is always seeking out energy in reduced forms. His multi-genre works often feel condensed down to the essence of an expression. Minimalist and yet infinitely mighty. Alva Noto’s Xerrox Project is also an all-encompassing audiovisual experience – where he explores the inherent life of replications. In a magical metamorphosis, copies keep adapting to ever greater extents from one another. Collaborating with the stargaze ensemble and André de Ridder, Alva Noto has leading lights by his side as he crosses the boundaries between electronic and orchestral music. The ensemble has played with Nils Frahm, Soap&Skin, Owen Pallet and others – as well as being the artists behind the compelling string melodies in the soundtrack to »The Revenant«.
