The Dublin concert hall was packed to the rafters on the night of 13 April 1742. To ensure everyone could be accommodated, the men had to leave their swords outside and the women could not wear crinoline. What they experienced was truly remarkable. No less a figure than London’s uncrowned opera king Georg Friedrich Handel was visiting Ireland – with his own organ and a brand-new oratorio titled »Messiah«. Needless to say, it was an overwhelming success.
