Pictures in music

Klaus Mäkelä is a phenomenon. At the age of 27, the young Finn is already conducting the world’s greatest orchestras. However, he is not interested in conducting as many orchestras as possible in a short space of time, but rather in long-term collaboration and working together all the more intensively. »If you really want to bring about change, you have to stay longer. [...] You get to know people better, you have to talk less in rehearsals and you understand each other more quickly. That saves a lot of time and gives us the opportunity to really make music,« he is convinced. Mäkelä has been working with the Orchestre de Paris as Music Director since 2021 – a time in which the orchestra and conductor have already been able to get to know each other very well. For their concert in Hamburg, they will bring magnificent musical images by Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky and Modest Mussorgsky to the Elbphilharmonie: fairy tale-like and fantastic, timid and powerful – a programme that is not only made for the ears, but also for the mind’s eye.
