Reunions are a pleasure, but so are new discoveries – and this jazz programme delivers both. Familiar faces like Wolfgang Muthspiel, Cécile McLorin Salvant and Brad Mehldau showcase their latest artistic offerings, while Jason Moran and the hr-Bigband pay tribute to the timeless elegance and beauty of Duke Ellington’s compositions, who would be celebrating his 125th birthday in 2024. The Ethiopian vibraphone and percussion maestro Mulatu Astatke performs in the Grand Hall for the first time, with his energetic band in tow. The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra also makes its Hamburg debut with some juicy big band arrangements filled with soul and groove at heart. Together with the Symphoniker Hamburg, a US all-star band celebrates the symphonic jazz of the great, recently deceased saxophonist Wayne Shorter. And, last but not least, there are two young, exciting female musicians from the USA to discover, with Lakecia Benjamin and the newly Grammy-awarded Samara Joy taking to the stage.
