Francis Poulenc, der wahre Spaßvogel des französischen Künstlerzusammenschlusses »Groupe des Six«, schuf für die Holzbläser einen kostbaren Schatz von fünf Werken – das Sextett, ein Trio und je eine Sonate für Flöte, Klarinette und Fagott. Mit dem funkensprühenden Sextuor für Klavier und Bläser, einem Paradestück für die von den »Six« gesuchte »musikalische Prosa«, schubst er das Publikum mitten hinein ins pulsierende Leben seiner Heimatstadt Paris. Das dreisätzige Stück wurde 1932 vollendet, im Jahr 1939 aber für die Aufführung mit Poulenc selbst am Klavier gründlich revidiert. Am Anfang klingt es wie auf den Grands Boulevards, alles lärmt, rennt, hupt, schreit und wirbelt durcheinander, und sofort dürfen die Holzbläser ihr ganzes Arsenal an moderner Akrobatik ins Spiel bringen. Im Mittelsatz geht es idyllischer zu, bevor im schnellen Teil plötzlich ein Jahrmarkttreiben vorbeizutingeln scheint. Das Werk schließt mit einer hymnischen Liebeserklärung an die Seine-Metropole.
Françaix war nicht ganz so auf Holzbläser fixiert wie Poulenc und komponierte für nahezu jede erdenkliche Instrumentalbesetzung – Hauptsache »Musique pour faire plaisir«: Dies war der Titel einer Bläsersuite, die Françaix 1984 aus beliebten Themen von Poulenc arrangierte. Sein Oktett, für das jenes von Franz Schubert aus dem Jahr 1824 Pate stand, ist vergleichsweise kurz und zeichnet sich durch lakonisch-abrupte Satzschlüsse aus, die zwar nonchalant, aber eben auch einfach nur witzig sein möchten. Auch der Auftakt ist ein Schabernack, beginnt doch Françaix, als erwarte uns ein braves Streichquartett. Und ja: Ein persiflierter Wiener Salon-Walzer war bei Schubert auch noch nicht drin.
Das Nonett von Louise Farrenc, der wohl bedeutendsten Komponistin in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts, wurde am 19. März 1850 in der Salle Érard in Paris vor mehr als 400 Zuhörer:innen uraufgeführt; im Ensemble spielte kein Geringerer als Joseph Joachim die Geige. Louise stammte aus einer Pariser Künstlerfamilie und war mit dem Musikverleger Aristide Farrenc verheiratet, der ihre Werke im Druck herausgab. Der beständige Kampf ihrer Kolleginnen um publizistische Anerkennung blieb ihr so weitgehend erspart. Insbesondere in Frankreich und Belgien war sie anerkannt; man pries ihre Kompositionen »wegen der Klarheit der Konzeption«, Berlioz schätzte sie, und Schumann meinte, »ein ganz leiser romantischer Duft« schwebe über ihrer Musik.

We suggest visitors arrive at the Laeiszhalle main entrance not later than 30 minutes before the start of the concert or event. Late seating is not guaranteed and latecomers may not be admitted to the concert hall.
