The Austrian newspaper »Standard« credits Mariss Jansons with »skill, refinement and intensity«, and for the »Neue Zürcher Zeitung«, he is quite simply »the greatest conductor of our time«. Herbert von Karajan’s former assistant has been conducting top international orchestras such as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra for many years. At the Elbphilharmonie he is now joined by the Vienna Philharmonic for a performance of the ecstatic »Symphonie fantastique«, in which Hector Berlioz used elements from music theatre, thereby opening a completely new chapter in symphony music. They also conjure the sounds of nature in a performance of Robert Schumann’s »Spring« Symphony, which the 31-year-old composer wrote in an euphoric and exhilarating four-day frenzy.
