Inspired by the artistry of Richard Mühlfeld, the solo clarinetist of the Meiningen Court Orchestra, Johannes Brahms wrote four pieces for clarinet towards the end of his life. Complex and dense, the four-movement piece is a musical retrospect, composed after Brahms had sent his testament to his publisher and friend Fritz Simrock. At the premiere in December 1891, his Clarinet Quintet was a great success.
Forty-nine years later, when Dmitri Schostakovich’s Piano Quintet was first performed in the small hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the ovations were endless. The crystal clear alignment of the composition, in which every note appears to be meticulously calculated and the harmonious arcs of suspense are attributable to Schostakovich’s great role model, Johann Sebastian Bach.These works both belong to the masterpieces of chamber music.
