Philharmonic Chamber Music Concert
Strauss / Schnittke / Schubert
The 18-year-old Richard Strauss was a member of the HARBNI social club in Munich and he indulged in a musical joke in his variations on »Das Dirndl is harb auf mi«. »Harbni« is not only the name of the Bavarian version of the board game »Ludo«. As dialect experts will know, »harb« means »wicked«. In the late nineteenth century the HARBNI social club in Munich was named after the term in reference to the noble social goal of living in peace and harmony and avoiding any »wickedness« towards our fellow man.
The old-fashioned manner with the traditional role models show how passionate Strauss was about the bourgeois world, but he is, despite that, never afraid to be bold and extreme. Also on the programme: an iridescent, polystylistic string trio by Alfred Schnittke and Franz Schubert’s »great« String Trio in B-flat major.
