Bringing in the New Year with a bang: the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra’s New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day concerts have been season highlights ever since the Elbphilharmonie opened. The Italian jazz and pop icon Stefano Bollani was originally invited as a soloist for the 2021/22 events, but he has sadly been forced to cancel due to international travel restrictions. Stepping in for Bollani is an artist who garners just as much respect in the global jazz scene: the Japanese pianist Makoto Ozone, who has worked with Gary Burton and Chick Corea, and who, like Bollani, is a regular in classical concert halls.

Not only does Ozone share this openness for both musical worlds with chief conductor Alan Gilbert, it also follows in the tradition of George Gershwin’s great compositions. His famous »Rhapsody in Blue« incorporated blues into classical music for the first time in 1924, an introduction that was long overdue. And so the work is at the centre of the rousing New Year programme, which Alan Gilbert opens with Antonín Dvořák’s ebullient »Carnival« Overture and continues with John Adams’ great foxtrot for orchestra »The Chairman Dances«.
