The Studio Philip An opens its 2022 season with a programme that brings together French masterpieces from a variety of genres. Jean Racine was one of the most important writers of French classicalism, and Jean-Philippe Rameau was one of the greatest composers of French Baroque music. Besides »Andromaque«, the tragedy »Phèdre« is regarded as Racine’s best work. Rameau’s first opera »Hippolyte et Aricie« is based on Racine’s »Phèdre«. The playwright and translator Clément Camar-Mercier was also inspired by this work. He created a monodrama that depicts the emotional conflicts of Phaedra, who has fallen in love with her stepson, in monologues that borrow from Racine’s work. Through the interleaving of these monologues with Rameau’s music, a completely new artistic experience is created for the audience.
