Glimmer of Hope

It was a deeply moving moment when Igor Levit accepted his Opus Klassik award as »Instrumentalist of the Year« in autumn 2019 and, with an audible tremor in his voice, dedicated the prize to the victims of the Halle terror attack. The first movement of the »Moonlight Sonata« – that showpiece of all romantically inclined piano lovers, which he had played beforehand – was suddenly instilled once again with its real meaning: plaintive, serious, pressing, full of doubt and empty of hope. Only in the second movement does the light return. At the Elbphilharmonie, straight after the closure due to coronavirus, Igor Levit grants the audience this glimmer of hope once more, playing Beethoven’s famous C sharp minor sonata in its entirety – up to and including the furious, breakneck finale, which places a virtuoso exclamation mark at the end of the concert.

According to a recent resolution issued by the Hamburg Senate, concerts at the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle can resume from 31 May: Information on your concert visit during the coronavirus pandemic
