Simply brilliant

Russian violinist Alena Baeva was a mere 16 years old when she won the Wieniawski Competition in 2001, one of the world’s top violin awards. Since then, Baeva has made regular appearances with big-name orchestras and conductors such as Pablo Heras-Casado, Teodor Currentzis and Paavo Järvi. For her reunion with Paavo Järvi and his Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Baeva has chosen to play a violin concerto written by a young genius: Richard Strauss was only 17 when he composed this work that combines technical challenge with Romantic impulsiveness.

The second work on tonight’s programme is rarely played. It comes from the pen of Swedish composer Franz Berwald, a contemporary of Beethoven’s and Schubert’s who was the head of an institute for orthopedic gymnastics in Berlin. In 1840s Vienna, Berwald matured into a fully-fleged orchestral composer whose scores are lovely to listen to, but also contain outbursts of energy reminiscent of Beethoven. One example is his »Sinfonie singulière«, which the great Swedish conductor Herbert Blomstedt once described as simply »brilliant«.
