Prayer for peace

On 11 and 12 April, two fundraising concerts for Ukraine will take place in the Elbphilharmonie – to set a powerful symbol for peace and democracy and to actively support the people of this war-torn country. All the artists are waiving their fees and the Stiftung Elbphilharmonie is footing the organisational costs – 100 per cent of the ticket receipts will be going to the »Aktion Deutschland Hilft« charity. Tickets for the concerts count as a tax-deductible donation confirmation.

In the second concert, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Ensemble Resonanz and the NDR Vokalensemble perform a joint programme. The first piece is performed in memory of the Ukrainian composer Hanna Havrylets, who died on 27 February 2022 – three days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. Her a-cappella choral work quotes one of the seven last words of Jesus Christ: »My God, why hast thou forsaken me?« The viola then strikes up an instrumental lament in Benjamin Britten’s »Lachrymae«. In that work, Britten borrows from the great English composer of melancholy songs John Dowland. After a musical prayer for peace by the Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks, the Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov, who wrote his »Prayer for Ukraine« in 2014 after the bloody repression of demonstrations on Maidan Square in Kyiv, will speak. On this evening, however, hope has the last word – in the form of Robert Schumann’s life-affirming »Spring Symphony«.
